"Beshalach: Sea Shanties, Snack Crises, and Queer Liberation Vibes"
Characters: 📖 Narrator – The storytelling icon with flair and feelings. 🌈 Moses (Moshe) – Now full-on liberation leader with sandals, sass, and holy determination. 🎤 Miriam – Prophetess, percussionist, and queen of the post-split dance break. 💅 Pharaoh – STILL can’t let go. Control issues, but fabulous eyeliner. 🍞 Israelite Chorus – A dramatic, complaining-but-loveable group who are just hungry and underhydrated. 🌊 The Sea – A diva who only parts when the music is right. 🕊️ God (Divine Voice) – Still loving the dramatic entrance and always with good timing. 🥖 Manna Fairy – A campy spirit of the wilderness who hands out mystery carbs. 🧂 Salt Bae Egyptian – Just a salty Egyptian guard who didn’t survive the sea drama. Scene 1: Marching Out with Maximalist Vibes Narrator: Welcome to Beshalach, where we get queer joy, divine drama, and the world’s most iconic water stunt. Pharaoh finally lets the Israelites go, but, as you guessed, it doesn’t last. Moses: Freedom, y’all! Pack your bags, grab your tambourines, and let’s bounce! Israelite Chorus: Wait, where are we going? Do we have a map? Is there a bathroom stop? Moses: We’re free! Who needs maps when you have hope, glitter, and a pillar of fire?! Pharaoh: (offstage, yelling) Ugh, did they leave already?! Someone bring the horses, I changed my mind AGAIN. Narrator: And just like that, Pharaoh realized he has no one left to boss around. So naturally, he comes chasing after them like a toxic ex. Scene 2: Sea Panic and Liberation Anthems (The Israelites stand in front of the Red Sea. Pharaoh’s army is behind them. Moses strikes a dramatic pose.) Israelite Chorus: We are literally going to die. I knew we should’ve stayed in Egypt. At least they had garlic! Moses: Everyone just... breathe. God’s got this. God (booming voice): Why are you yelling at Me? Tell them to walk. Raise the staff. Cue the sea. Moses: I LOVE when God gets theatrical. (Moses lifts his staff. The Sea parts dramatically with sparkly blue fabric or flowing students in costume.) Sea: (flipping hair) Yes, I PART. Yes, I SERVE. You’re welcome. Israelite Chorus: (screaming and running across) WE’RE RUNNING IN SANDALS! (They cross. Pharaoh and army try to follow. The Sea rolls her eyes.) Sea: Time’s up. BYE! 💦 (Cue splashing. A lone Egyptian flips dramatically.) Salt Bae Egyptian: I’m too salty for this world! Scene 3: Dance Break with Miriam the Prophetess Narrator: And when they make it across, who leads the party? Not Moses. Nope. It’s Miriam, the original hype queen. Miriam: (banging a tambourine) EVERYONE UP! TIME FOR A LIBERATION DANCE CIRCLE! Israelite Chorus: (finally cheering) Yassss, Miriam! (Everyone dances. Moses tries to clap on beat. It’s… awkward.) Scene 4: Manna and Meltdowns Narrator: Three days later: No food. No snacks. The Israelites spiral. Israelite Chorus: WHY did we leave Egypt? Are we going to starve? Where is brunch?! Moses: Please. Chill. God (calling down): Fine. I’ll send food. But it’s... experimental. Manna Fairy: (floating in with sparkly energy) Hi babes! It’s bread-ish. You collect it fresh daily. It’s local. It’s sustainable. It’s... queer-coded mystery carbs! Israelite Chorus: Does it come with schmear? Manna Fairy: Only if you believe. Moral of the Story: 🌊 The path to freedom is messy, fabulous, and sometimes wet. 💅 If you're going to run from a tyrant, bring a tambourine and a dramatic sibling. 🥖 Even mystery carbs taste better than oppression. 💖 Queer leadership means dancing at the edge of the sea, crying in the wilderness, and still showing up to lead. 🗣️ Speak your truth, even if Pharaoh won’t listen, someone will. Narrator: And that’s Beshalach, a parasha full of liberation, sea sass, and unleavened resilience. Tune in next week for more Torah, more drama, and more queer holy chaos! 🌈🎭✨ Next week: Yitro, where Yitro shows up with advice, boundaries, and a family reunion, right before we receive the Ten Commandments at Mount Dramatic. ⛰️📜👨👨👧👦
