"Noach: Noach’s First Day Off the Ark" A Funny and Slightly Queer Retelling of Bereshit for B'Mitzvah students and others.

Characters:
📖 Narrator – Calm, matter-of-fact, and occasionally amused. Provides stage direction.
🛠️ Noach – A bit unsure, very determined, and really just wants a day off.
👦 Shem – Noach’s eldest (or middle) son, responsible but exhausted.
🎭 Ham – Noach’s second (or youngest) son, sarcastic and always ready with a joke.
🌀 Japheth – Noach’s third (or eldest) son, the dramatic one who somehow always ends up with the chores.
🧵 Na’ama (Mrs. Noach) – Practical, no-nonsense, and definitely the real boss here.
🦁 Animals – Played by students, making all the right (and wrong) noises.

Scene 1: Finally on Solid Ground
Narrator: The ark has landed. The stage is set with the ark in the background, a bright sun hanging in the sky, and scattered props like barrels and hay bales. Noach steps down from the ark, looking relieved.
Noach: (stretches) Ah, solid ground! I thought I’d never stop swaying. (takes a deep breath) Fresh air, no animal smells—wait, scratch that. (sniffs) I still smell animals.
Narrator: The animals are seen leaving the ark two by two. A giraffe stretches its neck and sighs, an elephant splashes happily in a puddle, and a pair of chickens squabble over a worm.
Noach: (calling back to the ark) Keep moving, everyone! Giraffes, to the left! Lions—hey, lions, no eating the gazelles! We just finished a whole flood without drama, let’s keep it that way.
Shem: (carrying a heavy crate) Dad, can we talk about how much barley bread we ate on that ark? If I see another barley loaf, I’m throwing it into the ocean.
Ham: (dragging a sack) Yeah, and the smell in there! Do you know what it’s like sleeping above the hippos?
Japheth: (fanning himself) And who decided skunks needed to survive the flood?
Noach: (ignoring them) You’re welcome, by the way. Saved the world, got you off a sinking planet—no big deal.

Scene 2: Na’ama Has a To-Do List
Narrator: Na’amah appears, carrying a broom and looking determined.
Na’ama: Noach, are you just going to stand there, or are you going to help unpack?
Noach: (smiling) Na’amah, my love, I’ve spent forty days and nights with the world’s largest floating zoo. Today, I’m taking a break.
Na’ama: (raising an eyebrow) A break? From what, exactly? You didn’t even clean the goat pen.
Noach: (mock serious) I was busy! Steering the ark, watching for leaks, calming the doves.
Na’ama: Steering? It was raining so hard we didn’t even know where we were going!
Noach: (shrugs) And yet, here we are! (spreads his arms) A perfect landing.
Na’ama: (hands him the broom) Perfect? There’s mud everywhere.

Scene 3: Dividing the Work
Noach: (taking the broom reluctantly) Fine, but I’m delegating. Hey, Shem, you take over the unpacking! Ham, you’re on firewood duty! Japheth, help your mother sweep up!
Japheth: (groaning) Why do I always get sweeping?
Noach: Because I said so. And because I’m the one who built the ark.
Na’ama: With our help. Don’t forget the part where I had to chase down the ostriches.
Noach: (laughing) Okay, okay, fair point. How about a deal? I’ll start planting that vineyard I’ve been dreaming about, and you can tell me where to put it.
Na’ama: (smirking) Fine. But if you disappear into that vineyard, don’t expect me to chase after you.

Scene 4: The Vineyard Plan
Narrator: The family grumbles but gets to work, while Noach picks up a small grapevine sapling and begins digging a hole.
Noach: (to himself) A vineyard. That’s the ticket. After forty days at sea, I think we all deserve a little juice.
Narrator: The animals continue to explore in the background—a monkey swings across a tree, making monkey sounds; a pair of sheep nibble on some grass, making sheep sounds; and somewhere, a peacock dramatically fans its feathers.
Japheth: (pausing from sweeping) Hey, Dad? If we’re starting fresh, do we have to start with chores?
Noach: (grinning) We survived a flood, kid. Now we build.
Na’ama: (rolling her eyes) And clean.
Ham: And maybe rest once in a while?
Narrator: The curtain falls as the family works together, bickering and laughing—because even after a flood, life goes on.
All Characters (waving): The end!

Moral of the Story:
🌍 Starting over takes work. Just because the storm has passed doesn’t mean there aren’t things to clean up!
🍇 Balance is key. Work is important, but so is rest (and, in Noach’s case, a vineyard).
😂 A little humor helps. Especially when you’ve just spent forty days trapped on a floating zoo with your entire family.
🐾 Every creature matters. Even if you really question why skunks needed to be saved.

Narrator: And that’s Noach’s First Day Off the Ark! Now, who’s ready to build a mini vineyard? 🍇🚢
Next week: Lech Lecha, where Avram and Sarai leave it all behind to follow a G-d with no map and big dreams. 🧭✨🌵
