"Vayishlach: The Wrestler, the Reunion, and the Glow-Up"
A Slightly Queer, Very Funny Retelling for B'Mitzvah Students & Older Characters: 📖 Narrator – The all-knowing, sass-filled storyteller, here for the drama. 🧥 Yaakov/Israel – Our dramatic main character, now in his "rebranding era", full of emotions and excellent fashion choices. 💪 Mysterious Wrestler (Angel? Stranger? Future Self?) – A fabulous, celestial figure with serious wrestling skills. 🎭 Esav – The older brother, previously a rage-filled hunter, now a surprisingly chill himbo. 👩👧👦 Leah, Rachel, Zilpah & Bilhah – The real strategists of Yaakov’s life, rolling their eyes at all of this. 🐑 Random Sheep – Because let’s be real, Yaakov always has sheep around. Scene 1: The Ultimate Bi Panic – Wrestling EditionNarrator: Welcome to Vayishlach, where Yaakov has a full-blown identity crisis, wrestles a celestial being (with vibes), and then finally faces his brother—who, spoiler alert, is way more emotionally mature than expected. (Yaakov stands alone at night, stressing about his upcoming reunion with Esav.) Yaakov: (pacing) Okay, okay, deep breaths. It’s been twenty years. Maybe he’s still mad that I stole his birthright? Or maybe… he forgot? Maybe he found a new hobby? Maybe he--AHHH! (Out of nowhere, Mysterious Wrestler enters, dramatically cracking their knuckles.) Wrestler: It’s fight night, baby! Yaakov: Wait, what?! Who even ARE YOU? Wrestler: Doesn’t matter. Are we wrestling or what? (The most dramatic wrestling match in Torah history begins—Yaakov and the mystical figure flipping, dodging, grappling… it's a whole thing.) Narrator: And this, my friends, is the first recorded Jewish sport: Existential Wrestling. Yaakov: Okay, but WHY are we wrestling? Wrestler: Why do you think? Yaakov: Oh no. This is about my identity, isn’t it? Wrestler: BINGO! Yaakov: (struggling) You’re saying this is less about “winning” and more about “becoming my true self”?? Wrestler: Ding ding ding! You’re catching on! You gotta wrestle with who you WERE to figure out who you ARE, babe. (Yaakov freezes, panting, having a deep realization.) Yaakov: Oh. My. God. This is my rebranding arc. Wrestler: EXACTLY! And for surviving this, you get a new name! Yaakov: OMG, really? Wrestler: Yep! Say goodbye to “Yaakov” and hello to… Narrator: And just like that, Yaakov becomes Israel—which, fun fact, literally means “Wrestles with God” because nothing says Jewish identity like questioning everything and coming out stronger. (The Wrestler disappears in a fabulous sparkle.) Scene 2: The Brother Reunion (Featuring Therapy & Unexpected Hugs) (Dawn breaks. Israel limps toward Esav, fully expecting an ambush.) Narrator: And now, the moment of truth. Will Esav crush him? Will he ignore him? Or… *(Esav, who now gives off golden retriever energy, runs toward Israel and—HUGS HIM?? 🎉) Yaakov/Israel: (blinking) Wait. What? Esav: BRO, IT’S BEEN TWENTY YEARS! LOOK AT YOU! YOU HAVE A WHOLE FAMILY! SO MANY SHEEP! Yaakov/Israel: So… you’re not mad? Esav: I mean, I WAS mad. But therapy? Growth? Self-reflection? Turns out, I’m chill now. Also, I have, like, my own kingdom. I don’t need that birthright anymore. (Pause. Israel is STUNNED.) Narrator: And this, folks, is why emotional growth is important. Yaakov/Israel: (whispering to himself) I stressed over this for twenty years?? Esav: Oh, for sure. You definitely overthought it. Scene 3: The Glow-Up Is Complete(Later, Israel is processing while his wives watch from a distance, unimpressed.) Leah: So, let me get this straight. You wrestled… something. Rachel: Got a new name. Zilpah: Nearly had a meltdown over Esav. Bilhah: And Esav just… hugged you? Israel: (nodding) That’s pretty much the summary. Leah: Men are so dramatic. Rachel: Seriously. We could’ve told you Esav wasn’t gonna murder you. Israel: You could’ve??* Zilpah & Bilhah: Babe, we BEEN knew. Narrator: And that is how Israel finally realized that queer, chaotic, blended families are held together by smart, capable women who have always known what’s up. (Cue sheep bleating in agreement.) Moral of the Story:💪 Wrestling with identity is part of the journey. Sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively, but it’s always worth it. 🏳️🌈 Embrace the glow-up. Yaakov didn’t just get a new name—he got a whole new understanding of himself. 😂 Sometimes we overthink things… a lot. Yaakov spiraled for 20 years, and Esav was like, "Dude, we’re good." Let this be a lesson. 👀 Women & nonbinary folks always know what’s up. Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah were already five steps ahead. Narrator: And that’s Vayishlach—a parasha about self-discovery, emotional growth, and why you should always check in before assuming someone still wants to fight you. 💪🏳️🌈🐑✨ Next week: Vayeshev, where Vayishlach glows with sibling reunions and Vayeshev dives into technicolor fashion, dream drama, and a pit full of family issues. 🎽🌈🕳️
